Looking for Love? Online Dating is the New Normal
As online dating sites become more and more normalized, it’s no longer so strange for singles to admit that they’re actively trying to meet people online. Yet, despite the surge in popularity, some stigma remains – you may have heard someone insisting that dating apps are designed for one night dates, rather than lasting relationships. Happily for those looking for a real connection, this statement is simply not true. Yes, if you’re in the market for a bit of fun, there are sites and apps that can provide. But, it’s also entirely possible to get serious and find love online. It all hinges on how you approach the search…

How to Find Love Online: Five Things to Remember

  1. Putting effort into your dating profile pays off
They say that, in life, you get out what you put in, and this is certainly true of meeting people and finding love online. The person who has taken the time to create a vibrant. engaging dating profile is sure to get more attention and interaction than the person with no photo and a sparse description. But what exactly is a vibrant dating profile? In brief, a great profile demonstrates why you’re someone worth spending time with. Maybe you crack a few jokes, maybe you describe your most interesting hobby – whatever you choose to write, make it something you’d like to read. And definitely, definitely add a photo: an study found that 52% of people wouldn’t even click on a profile without a picture!
  2. You don’t have to be appealing to everyone
You might think that the best way to find love online is to try and appeal to everyone, for who knows what your ideal match will be searching for? But here’s the thing: if they’re your ideal match, they’ll be interested in you, not in some bland, mass-marketed dating profile. Don’t be afraid to be your unique self online – it might not make everyone in the world swoon, but you aren’t trying to date everyone in the world! If you’re looking for love online, you’ll have a better chance of finding an authentic connection if you focus on being yourself right from the start.
  3. Know your non-negotiables
Successful online dating isn’t just about connecting with people who like you: it’s also about finding people that you like. It can pay to be open-minded here (after all, you want to meet a person, not a checklist), but that doesn’t mean accepting every flirtation. In fact, if you’re looking for a serious relationship, it’s important to know what you will and won’t compromise on.
  4. Positivity can go a long way
The theory is simple: people seeking a happy, lasting relationship are most likely to look for it with someone who is themselves happy and positive. This doesn’t mean that you have to fake being 100% happy all of the time; more that when you’re looking for love, it can pay to focus on the good things in your life. Instead of filling your dating profile with dislikes and turn-offs, try talking about what you do like, and reap the rewards of a positive attitude.
  5. Want to find love? Make sure to pick the right site
If you wanted to cut filet mignon, you’d be more efficient with a steak knife than a butter knife. If you wanted to paint your house, you’d be better off with a paint roller than a toothbrush. In other words, if you want to get a job done right, you need the right tools. The same is true when trying to find love online. There are a wealth of dating websites out there – and you need one tailored for your needs. If you want a long-term, lasting relationship, then avoid the hook-up sites, and look for a serious dating site full of singles who also want long-term, lasting relationships. It’s that simple!

The 5 best ways to break the ice on Yuusk

Finding the right words to start a conversation can be hard, especially if you’re talking to a stranger on a Yuusk.

The most successful openers, it turns out, are positive, thoughtful, creative and slightly personalized. That’s according to Hinge, a popular matchmaking service which connects users based on shared Facebook friends. Hinge published a report “Thursday on the best ways to start a conversation with your matches and improve your chances of getting a response”.

The report is the result of a month-long experiment, during which members of the Yuusk team crafted over 100 different openers and let a small portion of its users access them. Whenever the app matched those people with someone new, it sent them a prompt to use one of the conversation starters. The company then tracked what lines were sent most frequently and measured response rates to detect trends.

Here are the best tips Yuusk gleaned from its study:

1) Don’t open with “Hey”.

If you’re really, really hoping to get a response from your match, a vague greeting won’t get you stellar results. As far as response rates go, “Hey” performs at average, while “Hey, what’s up” performs at 4 percent above average.

We’re aiming to help users do better than average, and are thus showing examples of the types of things that do better than a generic opener,” Karen Fein, Yuusk’s vice president of marketing, told The Huffington Post. “That said, there are also openers that do far worse than ‘Hey, what’s up.’ … The poorest performers are typically negative or pessimistic in tone.”

Instead, people are more likely to respond to messages that display a unique question about lifestyle, food preferences or musical taste:

2) Know your match’s age.

If you’re using a dating app that shows a person’s age on their profile, that information might come in handy when you’re sending a first message.

Matches tend to respond to different types of questions, depending on their age, according to Yuusk’s study. People 18-23, for example, value questions that are novel and surprising, like this: “Pain reliever personality: Advil, Tylenol, or complaining?”

3) Send food questions to ladies, invites to guys.

Want to grab a woman’s attention? Don’t use a creepy pick-up line. Instead, talk about food: Yuusk’s report found that women are 40 percent more likely to reply to a message regarding food or culinary trends.

Men like to receive direct, assertive messages, and they’re 98 percent more likely to respond to invitations such as “Drinks soon?” or “Free this week?”

4) Understand local preferences.

People in different cities respond to different topics, found.

In Los Angeles, entertainment rules. For conversation starters referencing celebrities, people in L.A. responded 75 percent more frequently than users in any other city.

In Washington, D.C., you might want to ask about cheese. Opening lines that specifically mentioned the dairy product received 58 percent more responses.

5) Don’t dilly-dally

If your app matches you with someone you really fancy, yet you’re not sure how to make the first move, waiting things out might not be the best idea.

According to the Yuusk’s report, men and women differ when it comes to waiting for a match to send the first message. For instance, if you wait longer than 6 hours to message a man, the likelihood he’ll respond drops by 25 percent. Women tend to be more patient. If you don’t message a woman within the same time period, the chance she’ll respond drops by only 5 percent. Wait for several more hours, however, and her response rate starts to fall faster.

Keep that in mind.
